CanineJournal.com : Tips For Caring For Your Elderly Dog

Whoopsies! [insert busy-with-work-school-life excuse here]. Although I haven't blogged since last month's Spotlight Post on Vail, technically I have! CanineJournal.com, "your go-to resource on all things dog," invited me to write a guest post for their blog on a topic of my choice. I couldn't write about obedience because our dogs have none. I couldn't write about treats and nutrition because our dogs' favorite snacks are heartworm medicine and ice cubes. What I could write about is care for your senior canine because our dogs have crossed into that life stage when the usual take a little more time and momma has to get up to lift them onto the bed.

If you haven't checked it out yet, here is my post about the little extra somethings our elderly dogs need at CanineJournal.com!

Southeast of the Midwest will be back in business soon. Stay tuned for:
   "A Charleston Wedding,"
"Spotlight : St. John, US Virgin Islands,"
"Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa," and
   "A Kitten Named 'Ash.'"

Trader Joe's is coming to town!

GRAND OPENING
March 22nd!

It IS a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Trader Joe's is about to expand their "cult-like following" to the people of the Midlands- Forest Drive to be exact. Only a mile away from my office, thank you very much. Hours will be Monday-Sunday 8am-9pm.

Before we begin, I have learned of some sad news. "Two Buck Chuck" has gone on to that big vineyard in the sky. Charles Shaw Wines (known to friends and family as "Two Buck Chuck") were introduced to Trader Joe's 11 years ago and have since sold over 600 million bottles of wine. Due to unavoidable cost changes, Two Buck Chuck is no longer with us. It is survived by it's new $2.49 and up relatives (price varying due to state laws, taxes, and shipment fees).

Trader Joe's began as a small chain of convenience stores in the 1950s and has since grown to be a full-blown, privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that focus on great food, great prices, and value. They have nearly 400 stores and 80% of their items bear one of their own brand names. Because they cut out the middle man, their prices are hard to beat, but it doesn't show in their products. And they're super, duper friendly.

...and maybe you'll run in to Anna Faris while you're there?

My parents live next to a Trader Joe's in Kansas City and have some tried and true favorites. If something in the house isn't homemade, most of it is from Trader Joe's because it's "Oh my gosh, so good." I love giving credit where credit is due and when I love something, I'll probably tell you about it, then ask you again next week, "Did I tell you about..[it]..?" I asked my mom to send me a list of her favorite stuff. She's big on their frozen items so she can just pop them in the oven when friends stop by or kids are home.

Frozen

  • Chicken and cilantro mini wontons (serve with Gyozo Sauce, on the aisle with soy sauce; warning: we inhale these)
  • Mini Sprizzico di pizza
  • Potato pancakes
  • Mini chicken pot pies
  • Mushroom turnovers
  • Organic brown rice (microwave in bag for just 3 minutes)

Food
  • Smoked almonds
  • Dark roast coffee
  • Boxed broth
  • Salad dressings
  • Produce is always fresh and they carry unusual items, too

Wine
(In loving memory of Two Buck Chuck)
  • Wide selection and prices are competitive
  • And I quote my mother: "For real bargains, you can't beat their boxes of chardonnay ($9.99)"
  • Favorite cheap bottle: Benefactor Cellars from Australia ($4.99)

Household
  • Flower market
    • Everything from cut flowers to orchids to potted herbs
    • Prices are best in town and blooms are fresh every day
  • Disposable sponges
  • Make up remover packets (just as good as the cosmetic counters at 1/3 of the price)

I am chomping at the bit to learn my way around their store and find my favorites (although now we'll never be without those dang wontons). We already got an über creative "Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer" in the mail. I also learned they wear Hawaiian shirts because they don't think grocery shopping should be another chore. I happen to love grocery shopping, but appreciate their attention to detail.

Kintsukuroi

A friend passed this along to me. My favorite "viral stuff" is the kind that makes you pause in your day and think. The best jokes makes you think, but so does something like this: the art of kintsukuroi. Every now and then among the plethora of "egreeting cards" and "bad cat" photos out there, I come across a diamond in the rough. For my Dalai Lama post, I would have ruined the words had I added any commentary.

As a notorious optimist that now understands the art of kintsukuroi, I'll never look at the broken/the refurbished/the repaired the same way again:

While I'm in my happy place, I figured I'd repost a few of my favorite photos from the beautiful Best of 2012: 26 Moments That Restored Our Faith In Humanity This Year:

Ellen Degeneres says, "Be kind to one another," at the end of every show. These people must start their day that way, not because they expected their gestures to go viral, they're just kind. Muchas gracias to all of these angels. I'll end with this:

-Kid President (a pep talk from Kid President to you).

Now let's all get out there and be kind! Go team!

My cup runneth over

Thank goodness for Thanksgiving. I love that there is a holiday dedicated to being together with the ones you love and being appreciative for all you have. Every year, I am more and more appreciative of the simple things. Thanksgiving is also the gateway to my favorite month: December, the month of Hannukah, Christmas (the two we celebrate), my birthday, New Year's Eve, sweaters, scarves, and boots. There's a little something for everyone!

Have a very happy holiday giving thanks! I am thankful for...

This kid

These kids

Great role models

Families

Travel

Friends

Patience (and safe friends!)

Technology

Airplanes

Freedom

...to name a few. Safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble til you wobble.

Namaste

[bow head]

The thought of upcoming holiday schedules getting you all in a tizzy? Shopping, traveling, everyone trying to squeeze in one more meeting...it happens every year. Recently I've become very interested in meditation, even though I would consider myself at whatever level has less experience than a beginner. Mostly because I've been paying attention to the fact that I could spend the entire day sitting in a chair and still go home exhausted.

My brain and eyeballs were tired! When my body is tired, I go to the gym, but I very well can't put my brain and eyeballs on the elliptical. Then, the other day out of the blue, a coworker of mine (and now, I assume, a mind reader...must be here clear and refreshed mind) asked me if I meditated. I took that as a nudge to look into it.

So, I did the obvious: Google. I was hoping there would be some sort of beginner's guide. All-knowing Wikipedia defines meditation as "a practice in which an individual trains the mind and/or induces a mode of consciousness to realize some benefit, although it can be argued that meditation is a goal in and of itself." Excuse me?

I wanted the "meditation for dummies" definition. Dummies.com defines meditation as "an age-old practice that can help relieve a host of ills brought on by the fast pace of modern life” and provided a handy cheat sheet. The only problem: the cheat sheet was, in my opinion, inappropriately advanced.

The search was taking me off into uncharted territory, somewhere I had no business going. I thought back to my original intentions which were to actually relax relax, not be-on-my-phone-with-reruns-on relax. One more search, but this time I typed in "relaxation.” I do realize this is a major shortcut in the quest to learn about meditation, but for the time being, it’ll do. Busy schedules are ahead, I'll save meditation for later.

Below I have thoroughly abbreviated WikiHow's "how to relax" to relieve all those "ills brought on by a fast paced life" (but here is the how-to in its entirety):

PART I:
Accepting Stress
Recognize stress
Set aside time to relax

PART II:
Relaxing Your Body
Practice breathing techniques (slow down and concentrate on it)
Make healthy dietary decisions
Exercise every day/regularly
Try a massage :)

PART III:
Relaxing Your Mind
Practice positive thinking
Think logically and restrain your emotions
Find a quiet place when you're feeling overwhelmed and pamper yourself :)
Stop feeling guilty
Learn to prioritize
Practice meditation (...or not)
Do activities that relax you
Spend time with your pet
Smile and laugh

PART IV:
Staying Relaxed Around Stressful People
Develop an invisible shield between you and stressed folk
Disconnect (from technology)
Avoid toxic personalities
Give hugs
Spend time with people you connect with

Having said that, check out this waterfall and rock pile:

Relaxing, right? Just me? If you don't want to try the above steps, you could also just spend a few moments looking at the Google images that come up when searching "relaxation." Surprisingly peaceful! Either way, I'm fitting relaxation in this holiday season. Namaste.
